Best dance practice app? Start with what you want to do
That question needs the one underneath it: what do you actually want to do tonight. In the store these apps look alike. In practice they do six different jobs.

Which dance app works with a video I bring myself?
This is the group for anyone with a dance sitting in their camera roll. MOVZ takes your video, mirrors it for you, plays it at any speed, loops the hard sections and records you next to the original. Dance.io and SyncMirror pull one passage apart: mirror it, slow it down to 0.25x, zoom in on a hand or a foot, and set your own A-B loop.
Djensur does something else with it. We cut you out of your room live and stand you next to the dancer on one stage, in a single picture. Mirroring is the one thing we do not do, and the other three do.

Which app gives you ready made classes?
STEEZY is a dance school in app form: filmed classes from professional teachers, step by step, from hiphop and ballet to K-pop, breaking and heels. In their player you can slow a class down, repeat a section, mirror the picture and see the teacher from the front or the back. Free to install, with a subscription to use it. You learn their classes, with a teacher explaining them.
Learn Dance At Home, known in Dutch as Leer Thuis Dansen, is a catalogue of ready made video lessons on Android, sorted by style, level and category, from hiphop and ballet to salsa, Bollywood and ballroom, with trending dances and favourites alongside. Free to install, with ads and in-app purchases.
SPARKY is a catalogue of K-pop routines to learn at home, with speed control, section by section repeats and an overlay so you can see yourself on screen. Free to install, with in-app purchases and subscriptions, and ads on Android.
Which app turns dancing into a game?
Just Dance Now turns any room into a Just Dance floor without a console. You put the routine on any screen with internet, hold your phone in your right hand and the app scores your moves, to licensed music. Free to install, with one free song a day and the rest through a pass or subscription.
STEPIN is a K-pop dance game: you dance for the camera, the app scores you with motion tracking, and leaderboards and tournaments hang off that. Free to install, with in-app purchases, and ads on Android.
DANCELAB also watches through the camera, but to give you feedback on jumps, turns and lines, with a practice library, a daily challenge and a streak. Free to install, and their own listing says you need a subscription to use the features.
Moving to music, or learning where your feet go
Everdance is dance as a home workout, aimed squarely at women in their thirties, forties and beyond, with follow along sessions you can do seated or standing. No experience and no equipment. Free to install, with a subscription in the app. It is moving for the joy of it, not learning a routine.
Dance Reality uses your iPhone camera to lay footsteps on your actual floor, for partner and social dances like salsa, bachata, waltz and hiphop, with the counts alongside and a choice between leading and following. If you want to know where your foot goes on count three, it puts the answer on the ground in front of you.
What Djensur does, and what it does not
Djensur belongs in the first group, which is why it is not at the top of this page. Three things you see above are not what we do: we do not mirror the choreography, we do not teach you a class, and we never score your dancing. If one of those is what you came for, the good names are further up.
Here is the part only Djensur does: you are cut out of your room live and placed next to the dancer on one stage, in a single picture. That cut out happens on your own device, so your live camera feed is never uploaded. Only what you choose to share or publish ever goes online.
Around that sits what you need to drill something: five speeds from 0.5x to 1.5x, ten seconds back or forward, an A-B loop on a dance you set up through the app, thirteen stages, and a recording of every run that you keep or drop. Afterwards you can score yourself if you want to. The app is not watching and never marks you.
What to know before you start. A dance is set up from a video file on your phone, so we do not fetch a TikTok link or pull a video off YouTube. One dancer has to be in shot, or the clip is turned down. Setting it up takes time, the app stays open while it runs and it needs internet. Adding your own video and keeping a library need an account. There is also a separate mode where you dance along with a YouTube video, and that one is not the stage.
